I'll never forget the first time I heard (paid attention to) "Bittersweet." I'm really bad at describing music, so I'll just say it really caught my attention. I was in FM radio at the time and I'm actually glad that the song did not chart on the Billboard Hot 100, and therefore the station I worked for did not play it. Because if we HAD played it we would've OVER-played it and I would probably hate it to death by now, 30 years later.
This song still gets me.
I realize you wrote about the entire album here but.......I have a hard time getting off the subject of "Bittersweet." :)
I still think BHTM put on the best live show. We see them every time they come to Portland. The shows always differ but leave us in awe of the energy, musical talent and love for their fans year after year. All 4 band members contribute to their unique sound and their set lists never fail to give you their best stuff. As long as I am able I’ll be at the front of the stage singing along with Todd.
This was great. Nostalgia, straight in my veins and I've got too much to say. I went to high school at Arapahoe in what is now centennial CO and there was a rumor that Todd went to our school (before I was there), which I just now looked up. He went to Colombine. Your hazel miller prom reference sparked a memory- I'm pretty sure the Psychedelic Zombies played a prom I went to at Heritage High.
Bittersweet remains a great tune, and yeah pretty incredible for those guys to make it out of CO back then.
You were playing in bands in Denver in the aughts? Maybe we crossed paths? I played in a group called everything absent or distorted and one called le divorce.
Too much to say, right? Realized I could have written so much more once I got going on this one. They were such a huge part of the local music scene back then.
Maybe Le Divorce sounds a bit familiar? We were called The Clause (after cutting it down from Dagger Iron Claw lol) and if you were around Hi Dive, Larimer Lounge, Old Curtis Street, Lions Lair etc. there might be a chance!
Pretty sure the only Big Head Todd and the Monsters song I’ve ever heard was on the “Blown Away” soundtrack. When I looked the song up (“In The Morning”) I see it also appeared on the Stratagem album. So good to go back and give it a listen. I may need to dig into their back catalog.
Holy smokes, I have thought about Blown Away in many years! Fun thriller and I’ll take Jeff Bridges anything. I think this one and Beautiful World are a great place to start.

Love it! I don’t know it’s that phat chorus on the guitar or how Todd is a pretty damn good singer, but that song is smooth like buttah!

Live really is the best way to experience them!

Hmm the memories are fuzzy but I was definitely around those joints a lot around them...so most likely! Here's some old EAOD, https://music.youtube.com/watch?v=wzDO9P-j0Hw&si=tjlJhXIkcwvqCdGh
Zoomer who grew up in CO and went to CSU. Always heard of big head Todd and the monsters, but never understood their true significance. Great read.
Right on! Thanks for reading and go Rams!
