Here's a smokin' set of this year's best records from Harp, Strange Magic, Sofia Kourtesis, Triptides, Molly Burch, MJ Lenderman, Daniel Donato, George Clanton, and Slaughter Beach, Dog!
That Harp album came in a little late for my AOTY list this year but I’m almost positive it’ll be one of my “2023 Misses” a year from now when I’m pulling together my 2024 AOTY list. That Molly Burch album is fantastic and only just missed out on my top 50 this year.
December is reserved for cash grabs, so it is a bummer when something that took 10 years to make drops at that time. The double digit listens I had in a short time made it so it had to be here, though!
Also, I’ll have to check out the live MJ Lenderman. I did really love Boat Songs, and his playing with Wednesday, who are getting loads of accolades this year. It’s the rare standout live album so I’m glad you found it stellar.
Wednesday is the one band this year that I feel like I’m taking crazy pills cos their album is annoying af to me and I think there was so many others to do it better this year. That being said, I’m happy to have guitar bands getting acclaim once again. So bummed that the MJ Lenderman live tape is already sold out!
I felt the same way! I like noisy guitar bands but couldn’t find a way into Wednesday. Though, I don’t like The Weekend either. And Rebecca Black’s “Friday” is an abomination. But “I Don’t Like Mondays” is one of my favorite songs.
Makes me want to make a day of the week playlist of songs I love for each day.
Lots of stuff for me to check out in January....was waiting for the George Clanton pick to appear! You are the one to turn me on to him and for that I’m grateful.
But even more than that, I had no idea Harp finally has a new album! Holy moly! I saw Midlake twice, once with and once without Tim Smith. Both were excellent. I’ve only played the one song you shared but that was enough to make me beyond excited. I can imagine Albion making my best of list if it was released two months ago.
I saw them with Tim Smith but haven’t since. Definitely think their newer one was better than the first without him and they’re still a solid band. But Albion feels like coming home again! And all hail the king, George Clanton!

Wow didn’t realize it had taken so long to make. Disappointing that it was a December release rather than January.

Much as I tried, I couldn’t connect with the Wednesday album either. A playlist of songs for each day sounds like a fun project!

The Slaughter Beach, Dog record is awesome, and thanks for getting it on my radar when it came out!
My pleasure! Can’t wait to see them when they roll through town next month.
