"...The concept of an album recorded in the isolation of nature has become somewhat of a trope in the indie world - the pandemic only escalated this tired PR stunt (can you tell my inbox is full of these pitches?). "

Lol. That's relatable. Honestly, I'd love to get that said, "In the middle of 2020, we decided to make a record right in the middle of the city. Together. Our only audience, Door Dashers between Dashes, and first responders, a few of whom sing back up on XXX."

As for this record, it's a new one for me, and after an endorsement like that, I'm stoked to check it out.

Just give me an album where the only percussion is communal handclaps for first responders, plz.

Ya gotta hear it, I think it will hit the right spots for you!

Getting some serious Prefab Sprout vibes here! Great rec - I'll be spending the day combing through SR's discography - also saw they're playing a small venue in Denver in September; this is my lucky day!

Oh man, if you want Prefab Sprout vibes, I hope you didn't miss Brothertiger's self-titled record last year. When I interviewed him last summer, he said Prefab Sprout is his biggest inspo these days, and it definitely shows on that record.

Saw that Stranger Ranger at Hi-Dive date and am considering driving up. Back in my band days, that was a regular spot we played and you're always guaranteed to have a good time there. Plus, they do a great job of booking bands like this!

Thanks for reading!

On my third listen and the album is growing on me. Initially the production felt almost too dense as you do accurately described... "It makes for a dense experience that will have you glancing to see if you’re still listening to the same song but spending the deserved time with the record..."

Not certain if it will be 'one of the most exciting listens' but I'm very glad I discovered them on BC and appreciate your insights.

I read an interview with them yesterday, and I left out of this review that they were inspired by Kevin Shields's production on 'Loveless' for this album - mostly because every indie band has an MBV phase and I find it to be a well-worn narrative. There's no doubt that holing up in a remote space and working on guitar tones for hours can come off as a little too dense, though.

Occasionally this one gives me a Duran Duran feel.
