Natalie Mering, who performs as Weyes Blood, is one of my favorite artists of the past decade. Her last record, Titanic Rising, was the best record of 2019. Since I didn’t have the newsletter then, I’ve been looking forward to whatever came next to review and share with my readers.
Her latest, And In the Darkness, Hearts Aglow, is just as lovely a record, and may be quickly moving past Titanic Rising, the more I listen to it (which has been many, many times over the past two weeks). Headstuff Music Editor and friend of the newsletter, Andrew Lambert, asked me to review the record for the Dublin publication, and I am so thrilled to share it with you today.
Album Review | Hearts Aglow As Weyes Blood Guides Us Through The Darkness
“Throughout the record, Mering plays with nostalgia while staying entirely modern in theme, and it’s in this way that the album excels. Mering’s warm embrace sounds like a familiar tune we know from a long-gone era that belonged to our parents and grandparents. At the same time, the topical lyrics make the album wholly contemporary and a snapshot of a world in burning flux.”
You can read the rest of my review here - I appreciate the reads, and please give Headstuff your support - they’re a fantastic outlet that constantly provides me with some of the Irish records I’ve shared with you over the past year.
I’ll be back next Tuesday to start 2022’s year-end celebrations, and for my stateside readers, enjoy your Thanksgiving week.
