Today Is a Stacked Release Day but Don't Miss out on 'That Sweet Breath' by Lowmello
The synth-infused indie rock EP is the third release for Mama Mañana Records.
I’ll admit that March has been a bit of a letdown on the new music front. After white hot surprises in January and February, I’ve found this month full of anticipation, met with a “meh” once digging into these records. After a few quiet weeks, everyone released their new album today. A quick look at my in-progress list includes:
The major label debut for Trio, oops, I mean boygenius (I’m here for Lucy Dacus).
The debut of Mike Kinsella (American Football, Owen, Joan of Arc) and cousin Nate’s new project, LIES, is easily at the top of my anticipated list for the year.
Sometimes You Hurt the Ones You Hate is the nineteenth album from my guy, the prolific Damien Jurado.
Holiday Camp from Those Pretty Wrongs (the legendary Jody Stephens of Big Star and Golden Smog with Luther Russell) and our friends at Curation Records.
Secret Stratosphere, a heady live set from guitar maestro William Tyler.
While I wish these could have been spread out over the past few weeks, one release is more important to me than any of these. As many of you know (welcome new subscribers!), in addition to writing Check This Out!, I also run an indie label called Mama Mañana Records. We’ve been busy over the past three months bringing you That Sweet Breath, the new EP from Lowmello, and today is the big day!
I’ve previously shared the title track and second single, “Fool.” Still, I will give you my somewhat biased opinion: all five songs here are nothing short of single-worthy in their unique Lowmello (Abel John) way. “Red Lipstick” kicks things off in a mega way, with soaring guitars and a chorus that’s run through my head for weeks now. The tender moments in the middle of That Sweet Breath are the previously unreleased songs that really stand out, though. “26” reflects on lost love with a meaty synth part that would make The Killers blush, and “Andrew” serves as a letter to John’s older brother and memories of growing up in Riverside, California.
That Sweet Breath is now streaming on all services, and I appreciate all of the playlist ads for “Fool” over the past month. If you listen to the EP and dig it, the best way to support the budding label is to grab a physical copy on Bandcamp. We’ve got it on a radiant pink cassette with exclusive artwork and audio nuggets, which is the best way to experience Lowmello’s work. In a Mama Mañana Records first, we also offer it on compact disc, which comes in a sharp-looking digipak and features a lyric booklet unique to the format. Finally, if physical media isn’t your thing anymore, That Sweet Breath is also available for digital download at a reasonable price.

The apparent goal with the record label is to ensure that each release is better than the last, and I know you’ll all agree that Lowmello is bringing the heat here. If you’re in Albuquerque tomorrow night (4/1), please stop by Marble Brewery for the release party, and celebrate these new songs with us. Abel and I appreciate your support and hope you enjoy the record as much as we do.
Congrats to you and Lowmello both on getting this out into the world! As you know, I’m a big fan. I’m psyched that a much wider audience now gets to hear it.
Thank you both. :)
