There’s so much awesome new stuff out this week, and here are some of the highlights:
Nation of Language is officially three for three when it comes to singles for their upcoming record, Strange Disciple. The latest is “Stumbling Still,” which still grooves in their 80s-influenced synth-pop wheelhouse, and I’m not complaining. They are one of my favorite bands of the past few years, and hopefully, they will make it three for three on albums when Strangle Disciple drops in September.
It’s great to have Julie Byrne back, whose Not Even Happiness was one of my top albums of 2017 in a fully-stacked year. The first single, “The Greater Wings,” from her upcoming album of the same name, dropped a few weeks ago, but the latest, “Summer Glass,” has me really excited. Throughout her first two records, Byrne mainly featured only acoustic guitar while focusing on her heavenly vocals, which is how it should be when you sing as she does. “Summer Glass” works in some electronic loops and strings, making me curious about her next phase.
Kieran Hebden & William Tyler teaming up for a few songs is not the collaboration I saw coming, but it makes sense when you think about it. Hebden, who performs as Four Tet, has plenty of atmospheric music in his repertoire, and freeform guitar maestro Tyler (if you haven’t heard Modern Country or Goes West get on them now) matches him through a cosmic country lens. The other song, “No Services,” is out at the end of June.
Finally, I want to take it locally and shout out to Justin Nuñez, who released his new single, “Momma,” last weekend. Nuñez is part of the Monsoon Music House family in Albuquerque, and if you live anywhere in New Mexico, you’ve probably seen him play, as I don’t know anyone who hustles and plays more shows. This new single is a touching number that reminisces about his mother, who passed away seven years ago. Produced by Edgar Wonder, you’ll also recognize Mama Mañana’s very own Lowmello on bass in the video. Nuñez’s new album is out later this summer, and as someone who has heard most of it, I recommend not missing out on the record if you’re into singer-songwriters.
