We’re shedding May and cruising into some great new songs and albums set to arrive over the next few months! I’m still jamming to the new record from Country Westerns (don’t judge a band by its name cos this thing shreds), but here are two highlights from everything else I can’t get enough of this week.
Longtime readers know I’ve been waiting for Barry Can’t Swim’s debut record for a few years - we finally received the release date, and When Will We Land? drops on October 20th! The Edinburgh-born, London-based producer topped my year-end EP list with Amor Fati in 2021 and again last year with the contemporary titled More Content. Mixing jazz and house music, Barry Can’t Swim is, for my money, the most exciting thing in electronic music right now. When Will We Land? includes ten new songs to accompany the gorgeous “Sonder” from More Content. It’s fair to say this is now my most anticipated record of the year, and while we wait, enjoy the heavenly new single, “Woman:”
Last week I received a recommendation for HOO HA! by Bad//Dreems, the third record for the Adelaide band. Coming from one of my oldest friends, whom I always know is sending good stuff my way, I knew I had to take the album seriously when he proclaimed that Bad//Dreems is the best Australian punk band at the moment. It’s considerable praise for a continent full of great punk bands. Fronted by Ben Marwe with Alex Cameron on lead guitar (no, not that Alex Cameron), Alistair Wells on rhythm guitar, and Miles Wilson’s propulsive drums, Bad//Dreams combine their rollicking rock with "literate, visceral lyrics that are equal parts character studies and modern commentary on the darker underbelly of Australia.” If you’re over how things are going stateside, you’re gonna relate and love this one:
A programming note, there will be no newsletter tomorrow, June 2nd. Enjoy your weekend, and I’ll be back Tuesday!
