This week, I’m happy to have Four Tet (Kieran Hebden) back with “Three Drums,” a chilled-out house track demonstrating why he’s one of the best in the game. You may have seen him last week at Coachella (barf) with Skrillex and Fred Again (I’m admittedly not as familiar with Fred Again, so if you have any recommendations, let me know) as they took over the late-night slot left in the wake of the Frank Ocean saga. I know what most of you are thinking, “Skrillex, no thanks,” and I agree, but I’m happy Four Tet is gaining mainstream success while touring as this trio. “Three Drums” is nothing like the EDM garbage you’d expect.
His last record, Sixteen Oceans, was a massive favorite of mine in 2020, and it ended up at number eleven on my year-end list. Here’s what I had to say:
Kieren Hebden has been producing music as Four Tet for over 20 years now, and with his tenth album ‘Sixteen Oceans,’ the British ambient, downtempo producer brings some much-needed tranquility to the year. After starting with the dancefloor bangers “School” and “Baby” (which features vocals by Ellie Goulding), Hebden downshifts into a meditative journey full of nature field recordings, harpsichord, glitchy beats, and well-placed wind chime samples. ‘Sixteen Oceans’ was released in March and has been a favorite mystical escape. This is an album to ease into the evening as it journeys into its ambient close. Always consistent, Four Tet is a great place to dive into the electronica world.
“Three Drums” is another atmospheric effort, so take a deep breath, and celebrate making it halfway through the week:

Sitting in the sun at my kid’s soccer practice listening to Rose City Band. It’s a nice vibe.
It’s at the other end of the playlist, but I could listen to Frankie Rose’s “Anything” all day long.
Right this minute I’m at home making dinner and listening to Billy Strings’ 2019 Home (I think I’ve started it over three times already). I just bought the CD from local Birdland Records in Virginia Beach. EVERYTHING on the CD is phenomenal. Waiting on all three of Elle King’s CDs, Love Stuff, Shake the Spirit and Come Get Your Wife to come in on Friday. I cannot think of a single song on any of those I don’t love. Just my two cents 😊
