We cover so much of the New Mexico music scene here at Check This Out!, but today, I’m excited to head north to my hometown and discuss two new singles from some of my favorite Denver artists!
Julian Fulco Perron’s In My Garden cracked my top 50 list last year when I commented, “Perron swings for the bleachers with the harmonies while penning Paul tunes sung with George’s voice,” regarding The Beatles’ influences found on the record. This year, he’s traded in the Fab Four for the Disco Kings with three singles that heavily recall the Bee Gees heyday. His new one, “Burnout, Baby,” is my favorite yet, as Perron embraces mental burnout with some howling saxophone. Fresh off some UK and European dates, I’m excited to hear what’s next in Perron’s disco era.
When I was getting this newsletter off the ground almost three years ago, I came across Light Levels, a genre-defying EP by Deth Rali, the recording moniker for Jay Maike. His unique blend of vaporware, chillwave, and indie influences was a refreshing new addition to the Denver scene, and Maike was kind enough to be my first interview in many years. Since then, watching Deth Rali blossom from a solo project into a full-blown band has been awesome. Their new single “Ruby’s Island Castle” is our first taste of this new era, and we know I can’t deny vaporwave earworms with odd time signatures, so I’m stoked to hear the following songs as they trickle out over the coming months.
I want to know what you’re listening to this week! Let me know in the comments.
These songs are also included in the ever-popular Good Ass Songs 2023 playlist. At over three hundred songs and counting, it’s the best way to catch up on another excellent year of music!
