Another week and another spotlight on a great new local tune!
Side Montero has been one of my favorite discoveries since heading to the desert southwest, so I was understandably excited when I heard that the Albuquerque staples were working on a new single with Mama Mañana Records’ own Zivi (here’s your weekly reminder that his LP, Lost in Love, is out 9/15!). The band has released an EP and a string of singles, but “SandBox” is their most enticing yet, captured at The Library in Eldorado. In another fun crossover, their bassist Ben Work sat in with Zivi’s band, The Rocks, on Friday night and crushed it.
Please give it a listen and check out the fun music video that documents how far the fellas have come!
Shoegaze is experiencing quite the revival over the past few years (I’m pretty sure it’s mentioned at least once a week in the newsletter), and when discussing the genre’s roots, it’s understandable that early UK and Irish heavy hitters like My Bloody Valentine, Slowdive, Ride, Cocteau Twins, etc drive the conversation. But the big news of the (shoegaze) day is the return of Drop Nineteens, whose 1992 record, Delaware, is held in the same rare air as these other bands. The Boston-based group stood out at a time when shoegaze wasn’t necessarily something mainstream listeners were lining up for stateside before disbanding in 1995.
Whether you’ve never listened to them or are stoked about their first album in almost thirty years arriving in November, I recommend reading this new piece over on Stereogum that covers their backstory and includes a fresh interview.

New Wilco coming this Fall!
I’m absolutely cannot believed there’s gonna be another Drop Nineteens record, and I absolutely cannot believe how stoked I am for that to happen.
This week, I’ve been listening to new records Steve Marino, Water Damage, and Longings. All very different, all rip.
