Say Goodbye to 2022 with Lowmello's New Single "That Sweet Breath," the Latest Release From Mama Mañana Records
The new single is streaming on all services with an EP to follow in the spring.
I hope all of you are enjoying the holidays! We’ve kept things quiet in the high desert, even while experiencing my first SNOW SQUALL (I’ve been through a few hurricanes, a healthy dose of blizzards, and a ton of freak lightning storms, but imagine all of those events wrapped up into one wild event).
I’m interrupting my newsletter break because I want to share a new song from one of Albuquerque’s most considerable talents, Lowmello. I got to know Abel John, who performs as Lowmello, over the summer, and after seeing one of his shows, I knew I’d love to have him join the Mama Mañana Records family. A long time in the making, I’m proud to share his new single, “That Sweet Breath,” on all streaming platforms today!
Abel and I share a mutual love of The Strokes and early-00s indie music, and this new song will definitely please all of you who appreciate this feeling. With a dual guitar attack and some spacey synths, John somehow manages to craft a long building intro, with an all-out jam of an outro, while squeezing a pop song in the middle of this delicious pop sandwich and keeping it at three and a half minutes to reel in your attention. It’s truly a gem of a song and one that captures the magic of his live shows. John played all the instruments on the track while recording it at local scene staple Kendall Jones’ Messy Grass studio. In addition to producing, Jones also mixed and mastered the song.
An EP that shares the same name as the new single will be out in the spring, so stay posted for a release date and physical media details.
Thanks for listening, and let me know your thoughts in the comments!
Some housekeeping notes:
This summer, I wrote a few articles for a hip Albuquerque-based publication, Iconica Magazine. After forgetting about them for the past few months, the issue is now out. If you can’t grab a physical copy, here are the pieces on MMR artists Gold Tides and Hubba. Also, check ‘em out for the awesome photo shoots.

As noted, the newsletter will move to a partial subscription next week. If you haven’t already, I really appreciate you helping keep the good times rollin’, as it takes many hours each week to bring you new reviews, features, and interviews.
Thank you, everyone, for your support and reading Check This Out! twice a week. Enjoy your New Years’ celebrations, and we’ll see you next week. I already have some exciting things lined up for the early months of 2023, so stay tuned!
Really digging this sound! Are you guys going to put it on Bandcamp at some point? (It's also possible I just totally missed it)
